From a Dallas learner permit to the skills test

Dallas first-time applicants can plan the permit, applicable ELDT and hands-on preparation as three separate steps.

Does my Dallas learner permit appointment include the road test?

Plan two separate steps. DPS issues the commercial learner permit after the applicable knowledge tests. A skills-test appointment comes later, after the required waiting period and applicable ELDT. Confirm the actual testing center before arranging a vehicle.

Find the right DPS location before booking equipment

Use the issue date on your commercial learner permit to plan the eligibility window. Verify which Carrollton or Dallas–Fort Worth office your application or test appointment names before you drive there.

Office suggestions use the listed locations near the starting city. Your appointment confirmation determines the actual test address. Get Your CDL Quick! provides its in-person vehicle services in Royse City.

When your permit arrives, check the printed class and endorsements against the equipment you want to drive. Ask about the transmission and brakes on the test unit before adding a practice session. Ask which rental charges apply to your test site, what fuel costs extra and whether your selection qualifies for separate complimentary behind-the-wheel ELDT.
